Club Permits

VicRoads Club Permit Scheme

The Maserati Club of Australia is very proud to be affiliated with VicRoads to manage and administer the Club Permit Scheme on behalf of its members.

In general, the Club Permit Scheme allows for unregistered motor vehicles that are at least 25 years old to be issued with a registration permit for limited use as an historic vehicle on the road network.

The Club Permit Scheme requires that:

•  The holder is a financial member of a car club.  Click Here to become a member of our Club.
•  The vehicle is safe and roadworthy
•  The vehicle is not used for commercial purposes
•  A logbook entry is made each and every time the vehicle moves more than 100 metres from the vehicle’s garage address.

What you need to do to Join this Scheme:

To register a vehicle for the first time, you will need to provide our Club Permit Officer with:

•  The completed VicRoads Application Forms:

– The Eligibility and Standards Declaration for Club Permit Vehicles Form
– Club Permit Application Form

•  A current roadworthy certificate issued in Victoria.  These are only valid for 30 days.
•  Eight (8) photographs of the vehicle saved to a USB stick – the photos should show the driver’s side, passenger side, front, back, engine compartment, odometer, dash, VIN/Compliance Plate (see example images).
•  A stamped, self-addressed envelope for the return of your original documents.

You will need to present the original paperwork to VicRoads in the usual way for registration of a motor vehicle.

Once you have completed your Application, send it by Australia Post to our Club Permit Officers listed below.  They will assess your application, complete the paperwork, copy it for our records, and return the originals to you.

Please refer to the VicRoads website for further information.

For a Permit Renewal, just complete the renewal form that you have received from VicRoads and return it to one of our Club Permit Officers.

Please Note, for a renewal:

•  No Roadworthy Certificate is required.
•  New photographs are only required if you have made changes to how your vehicle looks since it was last registered.

Frequently asked questions:

Is the Club Plate Scheme different from the Club Permit Scheme?

No

What vehicles are eligible for the Club Permit Scheme?

•  Veteran Vehicles – manufactured before 1 January 1919.
•  Vintage Vehicles – manufactured after 31 December 1918 and before 1 January 1931.
•  Classic & Historic Vehicles – manufactured after 31 December 1930, but more than 25 years before the date of the application for a Club Permit.

Further information can be obtained on the VicRoads website

How can I find out how old my vehicle is?

•  If your vehicle is fitted with an Australian compliance plate, the plate date is the date of manufacture.
•  If your vehicle is fitted with an import compliance plate, the date of manufacture is determined by a manufacturer’s build plate, a chassis number, or documentary evidence from the manufacturer’s records.
•  If your vehicle does not meet either of the above requirements, we may determine the manufacture date based on information sourced from the VicRoads registration data base, historical data, or evidence from a vehicle safety and compliance expert.

Please note:  If the day of manufacture cannot be established, the day of manufacture is therefore assumed to be the last day of the month.

Most compliance plates have the month and year stamped into them. e.g.  If the stamped date was 01/99 then the vehicle would be eligible for the Club Permit scheme in February 2024.  Making it older than 25 years.

Further information can be obtained on the VicRoads website

How old can my Roadworthy Certificate be?

Roadworthy Certificates are only valid for 30 days.  If your Certificate has expired, or will expire during the timeframe of the registration process, you will need to obtain a new one to attach to your Application.

Can my vehicle have a roll cage?

Yes, but it must comply with VicRoads VASS requirements.

Further information can be obtained on the VicRoads website

How much does it cost to get Club Plates?

•  The Maserati Club fee is $35 per vehicle / per year capped at $210 per year (being 6 registrations). If you have more than 6 vehicles on Club Plates, the additional vehicles do not incur a fee.
•  You will also need to pay your Membership Fee which is $50.00 per year. Existing Life Members only pay the Club Plate Fee.  You will not be able to register your vehicle on a Club Permit unless you are a member of a participating car club.
•  You will also need to pay the VicRoads Registration Fees.

How should I take photographs of my vehicle?

Photographs should be taken as per example images.  Some useful tips for taking your photos:

•  Take them in good light but not in bright sunlight. Morning light or an overcast day is best.
•  All of the photographs should be in focus and in colour.
•  The primary light source should be located behind you and the camera (or Phone). This may require you to re-position the car during the process.
•  You should photograph each side of the vehicle ‘square-on’ in other words, not from an angle.
•  We need:

–  Driver’s Side,
–  Passenger Side,
–  Front,
–  Rear,
–  Engine Bay,
–  Odometer,
–  Dash including steering wheel and pedals, and
–  VIN/Compliance Plate.

•  All photographs should be saved to the USB drive in their original size.

The VicRoads Website does not mention the need for Photographs.  Why do I need to supply them?

Correct, neither the VicRoads Website nor their forms ask that you supply these photographs.

Our Club Permit Officers are required by VicRoads to verify the vehicle being registered and to maintain a file of documentation.  The photographs you supply form part of that documentation.
